KDP Free Promo Weekend RED MONOLITH FRENZY
0
Well, we’re still not entirely convinced that the whole Amazon KDP free promo weekend deal-i-oh does a title any particular good in the long run, but then again, we haven’t tried it yet with our erotica titles, have we? No. No, we haven’t.
That’s about to change.
Tomorrow, Friday August 10, through to Sunday August 12, we will be raising up for sacrifice to the reading hordes (and yes, to Mammon, if we’re being honest) the first book in Justine G’s horny horror-fest of a series, BLACKSTONE Erotica: RED MONOLITH FRENZY!
We’re kinda excited about it, actually. The recently released second book, GREEN FEVER DREAM, is doing alright, but we figure it can’t hurt to introduce readers to the book that started it all. So, here’s the link > RED MONOLITH FRENZY: Book 1 BLACKSTONE Erotica < and here’s our request of you, the loyal Martian Migraine Press consumer: this weekend, GO and GET IT. And once you’ve downloaded it, tell your friends to do the same. And then read it! Read it and then be a dear, would you? Pop some reviews on to the page once you’re done.
OK, perhaps that’s a lot of steps, but we know you’re up for it. We’d love for RED MONOLITH FRENZY to hit #1 in the Erotica listings! Do it for Justine! Do it for Lovecraft! Do it for high quality, novella-length smut!
Wendigo Frenzy! New Information from Our Astute Readers Comes to Light!
0Is there any sensation finer than learning that one once supposed was correct, is, in fact, not-correct? It’s a delicious sort of rug-pulled-from-beneath feeling, isn’t it? Sometimes it creates new prize offerings, even!
Astute MMP reader Riley Vandall went beyond the call of our last contest and dug up pre-Teddy Roosevelt sources for Wendigo tales! Ah-like so…
Okay now that the mystery prize winner has been announced, I can reveal what I discovered pondering weak and weary over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore.
Interestingly enough, when I first began looking for published works that featured the Wendigo that predated the eponymous story by Algernon Blackwood, I soon discovered the account in The Wilderness Hunters by one Theodore Roosevelt (Ed. as our original bonus prize winner Dakota also did). I would have taken this as true, if my own previous incorrect answer for the mystery prize had not been the product of very little research. I was determined to be one hundred percent sure on it this time.
Further researches led me to discover numerous historical excepts, dating the earliest back to the 17th and 18th centuries, although none of these were exactly the answers I was searching for as I was looking for the author of the first published tale featuring the Wendigo. But it did solidify a thought I had: If recorded historical accounts of the Wendigo existed that far back, and even further back if you include oral tradition of the original inhabitants of North America, then it would seem even more probable that a published tale of the Wendigo would exist even before the one recorded in The Wilderness Hunters. My theory proved correct. Not once, but twice in fact.
The first I discovered was in The Great Lone Land: a Narrative of Travel and Adventure in the North-West of America by Sir William Francis Butler published in 1872, 21 years before Theodore Roosevelt’s account. The narrator is informed by his companion in chapter 11 that the Indian they meet is ‘a windigo’ and elaborates a bit on the background of such an individual. Rather brief and tame compared to future stories, and perhaps not worthy of being considered a true tale but I found it important to include because it remains part of a larger text like The Wilderness Hunters. The entire narrative can be viewed here: http://www.gutenberg.org/files/15401/15401-h/15401-h.htm
The second published work I found was another long-winded title called Algic Researches, Comprising Inquiries Respecting the Mental Characteristics of the North American Indians, Vol. 2 of 2 by one Henry Rowe Schoolcraft. Published even earlier than The Great Lone Land in 1839; 33 years before the aforementioned, and a full 54 years before Theodore Roosevelt’s. Henry Rowe Schoolcraft’s book contains this chronicle of an oral Saginaw story about the ‘The Weendigoes’ that begins on page 105. http://www.gutenberg.org/files/35175/35175-h/35175-h.htm#Page_105
It is this book and it’s author that I claim to be the oldest published tale of the Wendigo that we can find, although I believe the title of the first published will always be left open because who knows whom might have written about it before so long ago.
On a related note, I’ve finished reading Soft From All The Blood and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m in the process of writing a review of it. Looking forward to reading other MMP works.
And so you shall! Read other MMP books, that is. Our author and scholar of the weird Justine G is so taken with the deep level of research done here by Vandall that she exclaimed “hell, give him my book as a prize! Why does Jones get all the fun?” So, Riley, a copy of RED MONOLITH FRENZY is on its way to you. Enjoy! And thanks for the research! It’s the kind of thing we love to see from MMP readers.

‘Soft From All The Blood’ Free Promotion Wrap-up & Other News…
0We ran our two-day free promotion on Amazon for Soft From All The Blood by S R Jones at the beginning of the month. Less than 4 weeks later, we can say with some confidence that they’ve got something there: Soft From All The Blood was downloaded just under 2500 times between May 3 and 4, and the book has seen increased sales in the weeks since. At least 1 sale per day, often more. Our other two current titles, the first book in Justine G‘s BLACKSTONE Erotic series RED MONOLITH FRENZY, and Jones’ tidy flash-fiction collection The Ecdysiasts, have also seen a bit of an up-tick. Most importantly, Soft From All The Blood now features in the ‘Customers Also Bought’ and ‘Also Viewed’ categories, which definitely helps things along!
And here we thought that 100 free downloads would be decent. Yes, we’re embarrassed by our naïveté as well.
We are always pleased with honest reviews, so, if you’re among those 2500 who found a space for Jones’ book on their e-reader, won’t you please pop on by its Amazon page and let us know what you thought?

In other news, we’ve had to move the release dates up a bit for the next MMP books. It’s a good thing we don’t choose actual, single dates for these things! June is now the month to watch for the second book in the BLACKSTONE Erotica series by Justine G. We’re told it’s just about ready but “added bookings in my lecture series tend to play hell with my free writing time”, says Justine. We’re happy to wait for quality product, of course, and can’t wait to see what she has planned for GREEN FEVER DREAM, especially considering those final scenes in Book One!
The e-chapbook R’LYEH SUTRA will also be slightly delayed. skawt chonzz‘s bizarre poetics and altered-state prose awaits the resolution of some technical glitches vis a vis a proposed insertion of a randomly sampled and hyperlinked occult document. Folks, this was much easier when MMP put out the actual, physical version of this chapbook last year, but we are working hard to make the weird thrill at the core of the digital R’LYEH SUTRA as mind-bending and unsettling as its paper ancestor!

We haven’t said much here regarding Haley Warren‘s THRESHOLD616 YA series, as when it finally sees release (Halloween 2012) we want to blow the roof off this thing. And by this thing, we (probably) mean “the Internet”. Alright, kidding. Very slightly kidding. But we would like to announce that we’re speaking with some very talented artists about the cover to the first book, Children of Hazard, and we’re getting pretty excited about that! More details as they come in…

Finally, some news about submissions…
Martian Migraine Press is now open to submissions for our new journal, ONEIROS. This journal, which will be available in multiple e-formats (and possibly a limited press run), is focused on mapping the territory of human dreams! We’ll be placing ONEIROS in our non-fiction category, naturally. For more details on what we are looking for from contributors, please visit our Submissions page.
